The No. 8-ranked Columbia Lions continued their commanding run through Ivy League play this past weekend, sweeping both Brown and Yale at home to remain undefeated in conference matchups.
With these victories, the Lions improved to 13-4 overall and 3-0 in the Ivy League, showcasing the depth and consistency of their lineup.
On Saturday, Columbia faced off against Brown (18-8, 0-3 Ivy), opening strong in doubles. Senior Max Westphal and junior Sachin Palta set the tone with a 6-2 win over Alex Finkelstein and Zander Bravo. Seniors Hugo Hashimoto and Jayden Templeman followed with another 6-2 victory to secure the doubles point for the Lions.
In singles play, the Lions continued their dominance. Hashimoto dispatched Noah Hernandez 6-3, 6-2, while junior Nicolas Kotzen followed with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Oliver Worth. NCAA champion Michael Zheng kept the pressure on with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Finkelstein.
First-year Thanaphat Boosarawongse added a 6-2, 6-3 victory before Palta and Templeman sealed the sweep in two highly competitive match tiebreaks, defeating their Brown opponents to close out the day 7-0.
The Lions carried their momentum into Sunday’s matchup against No. 50 Yale (10-8, 1-2 Ivy). Westphal and Palta struck first with a 6-1 doubles win over Krish Gupta and Dylan Tsoi, while Zheng and Kotzen followed with a 6-2 victory to clinch the doubles point.
Boosarawongse led off singles with a dominant 6-4, 6-0 performance over Tsoi, marking his third consecutive singles win and improving to a 16-8 season record. Kotzen, riding a 10-match winning streak, defeated Edward Liao 6-3, 6-2 for his second straight-sets win of the weekend.
Hashimoto finished the weekend on a high note, overcoming an early deficit to defeat Eric Li 6-4, 6-4 and secure Columbia’s second 7-0 sweep.
The Lions will return to action this Friday at the Milstein Family Tennis Center, where they will look to extend their Ivy League streak against Penn (19-7, 1-2 Ivy) at 2 p.m.
